SULAIMANI — The Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab, said Turkey is building 20 more dams on water resources that are the main source of Iraq's rivers.

Diab said in a press conference on Wednesday (March 15) that 104 dams have been built on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

He said due to the dams built by Turkey and Iran, Iraq is no longer the country of two rivers but has become a nation with just two water channels.

Iraq has not yet been able to deliver the country’s water problems to the international community, but it is now seeking support for the issue, he said.

The World Bank has cited Iraq as one of the countries most vulnerable to desertification and climate change.

Dr. Ali al-Lami, an advisor to the Iraqi prime minister in environmental matters, said on Sunday Iraq has decided to allocate $6 billion in the 2023 budget for projects related to the environment and climate change.
