SULAIMANI — More than 11,000 traffic accidents occurred in 2022, the Iraqi Ministry of Planning said on Monday (March 13).

The spokesman for the Ministry, Abdul-Zahra al-Hindawi, said in a statement 3,021 people died in car accidents, 2,474 of them male, (81.9 percent), 547 female (18.1 percent).

The number of people killed in car accidents increased by 6.8 percent compared to 2021 and injuries have increased by 12.9 percent.

Hindawi said 11,23 car accidents were recorded in 2023, up by 56.3 percent compared to 2021.

He added the high rate of accidents was due to drivers' failure to comply with the traffic rules, causing 79.2 percent accidents, and only 6.2 percent were due to bad road conditions, while 14.6 percent were due to other factors.
