SULAIMANI — The Iraqi Council of Ministers approved Halabja as a province on Monday (March 13) and has sent the issue to parliament for a decision.

Arian Taugozi, a New Generation Movement (NGM) MP in the Iraqi parliament, said the Council of Minsters voted for Halabja to become the 19th province of Iraq.

He said the Ministry of Planning approved the procedures for making Halabja a province and sent it to the Council of Ministers on the request of the NGM.

Halabja Governor Azad Tofiq said in a press conference the decision to make Halabja a province is a major, important act made by the Iraqi government.

He said he demands the decision be implemented as soon as possible, because Halabja deserves to become a province.

Halabja became a district in 1889. It was the second largest district in Iraq after Najaf, and was later declared a province by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on March 13, 2014.
