The unemployment rate in Iraq has decreased from 17% to 13% as a result of major development projects launched by the Iraqi government, according to Mazhar Mohammed Saleh, economic advisor to Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani.
Speaking on Tuesday, Saleh said the government has implemented dozens of service and infrastructure projects across the country—such as the construction of one million housing units, hundreds of schools, hospitals, bridges, and electricity and water networks—to boost the non-oil economy and reduce dependence on oil revenues.
He added that the government’s economic reform agenda, which aligns with International Monetary Fund (IMF) guidelines, has contributed to the drop in unemployment. However, he stressed that a deeper transformation of the non-oil sector is still required to ensure sustainable growth.
