SULAIMANI — The US launched air strikes in Syria on Thursday
night (March 23) in retaliation for a drone attack that killed a US contractor
and wounded six others, Reuters said.
The Pentagon said a drone of Iranian origin attacked a
Coalition base in Hasakah on Thursday afternoon. The attack killed a contractor
and wounded six others, including five American troops.
American forces responded soon after with "precision airstrikes”
targeting locations used by militias affiliated with Iran’s Revolutionary
Guards in Deir ez-Zor.
The Syrian Observatory For Human Rights said eight
Iran-backed militia members were killed in the airstrikes that hit warehouses
in Harabesh and al-Mayadeen after midnight on Friday.
Others were severely wounded and the number of fatalities is
expected to rise.
Positions in al-Bokmal desert in eastern Deir es-Zor were
also targeted, the Syrian Observatory reported.
