SULAIMANI — The President of the New Generation Movement, Shaswar Abdulwahid, held a Newroz event for the members of the diplomatic community in Baghdad on Wednesday (March 22).

Representatives from 30 countries attended the celebration, including longstanding opponents, such as the US, Iran, Russia and the UK.

Diplomats and ambassadors from Italy, Finland, Egypt, Lebanon, Bulgaria, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Venezuela, Yemen, Armenia, Romania, Indonesia, Palestine, Mauritania, Libya, Sudan and Somalia also joined the event.

Abdulwahid said Iraq is a prosperous country with great opportunities to develop and become a peaceful safe nation for Iraqis along with local and foreign investors.

However, he said weapons and militias dominated the reason, prosperity and democracy.

Abdulwahid also declared the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has not held an election on time during its 32 years of governance.

Abdulwahid criticized the two ruling parties in the Kurdistan Region, stating they took control of the Region’s institutions through force and by financial means. He said more than 65 percent of the Region’s revenue is controlled by the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).

He predicted if the KDP and PUK continue to rule in the Region, there will be no value left for democracy, as they will continue to avoid holding elections.
