SULAIMANI — Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Deputy
Minister of Peshmerga Affairs Sarbast Lazgin claimed on Wednesday (August 18)
that a roadside mine placed by the Kurdistan workers’ Party (PKK) hit a
vehicle belonging to the ministry and slightly injured a Peshmerga member in
Duhok’s Amedi district.
Lazgin said in a statement that the mine was planted on a
public path used by Peshmerga forces and civilians.
The PKK has fought a decades-long insurgency against the
Turkish government for Kurdish rights and autonomy and maintains a network of
bases in the Kurdistan Region.
The KRG has close economic, political, and security
relations with Turkey.
Ankara launched Operation Claw Lightning earlier this year
and thousands of villagers have been displaced by the fighting.
The Peshmerga and the PKK have clashed on several occasions
since November.
In June, six Peshmerga were killed in two alleged clashes
with the PKK, though the latter has denied responsibility.
