SULAIMANI — Deputy Minister at the federal Ministry of
Displacement and Migration Karim Nuri said on Saturday (October 2) that the Iraqi
government will work to bring home Iraqi migrants currently stranded on the
border between Lithuania and Belarus.
Lithuania and Poland have recently experienced a surge in
the number of refugees and migrants seeking to their borders from Belarus, many
of whom are from Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
Nuri told the Iraqi state-owned al-Sabah newspaper that 275
Iraqi nationals are currently stranded on the border, including 14 families,
who are being housed in 29 camps.
He said that the ministry’s plans to help them include
monitoring their conditions and assisting in voluntary repatriation.
