SULAIMANI— New Generation Movement (NGM) group in the
Kurdistan parliament has filed a suit at the Iraqi Federal Court in Baghdad
over extending the parliament's fifth term.
On October 9, eighty members of the Kurdistan parliament
voted to extend parliament’s current term for another year.
NGM MPs objected to the extension, describing it as
"unlawful and unconstitutional", and have said they would resign.
The NGM fraction filed the suit against the Kurdistan
parliament, the Kurdistan Region Presidency and the Kurdistan Regional
Government (KRG) saying they all now lack "legitimacy".
The current term of the Kurdistan parliament, which ends on
November 6, has now been extended until November 2023.
The Kurdistan Region’s parliamentary elections were
scheduled to be held in October, but the polls have been postponed after the
electoral commission was not reactivated due to disputes between Kurdish
parties.
