Kurdish farmers gathered in Khurmatu on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, to prevent the occupation of their agricultural lands, staging several hours of rallies. Iraqi forces later arrived in the area from Baghdad following the demonstrations.
The land dispute dates back to 2017, when Iraqi forces re-entered disputed territories and Peshmerga forces withdrew. Since then, Arab farmers have increased their claims over agricultural lands, filing dozens of complaints based on Revolutionary Leadership Council decisions for restitution or compensation.
Following the October 16, 2017 events, repeated clashes and attacks have occurred, with the issue remaining unresolved to this day.
