The Independent High Election Commission (IHEC) announced on Monday that the verification of candidates for the upcoming elections will be finalized within two days and forwarded to the relevant authorities for further legal and security checks.
IHEC media group head Emad Jamil stated that the number of candidates has surpassed 7,900, with 46 individuals disqualified for failing to meet the legal criteria outlined in Nomination Rule No. (3) of 2025. In addition, 11 candidates listed as high school graduates were replaced with university graduates, and three male candidates were replaced by female candidates to help meet the required 25% female representation quota.
Jamil noted that the draw for candidate numbers is expected to take place in August. He also emphasized that the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council has taken a firm stance against the return of former Ba’ath Party officials to the political process.
