Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said Saturday that Erbil is ready to engage in talks with Baghdad to establish a new oil and gas law. His remarks come amid ongoing tensions between the KRG and the federal government over the delayed disbursement of salaries.
Barzani accused Baghdad of using the salary issue as a political pressure card against the Kurdistan Region, describing the move as unconstitutional and harmful to national unity.
"The use of people's livelihoods as a bargaining chip is unacceptable," Barzani said. "We are committed to resolving the oil export issue through dialogue and are open to drafting a new oil law that serves the interests of all Iraqis."
He also noted that although five oil-related agreements have been signed with Baghdad over the past three years, none have been fully implemented, which has impeded the salary distribution process in the Region.
