SULAIMANI
— The Prime Minister of Iraq, Mustafa al-Kadhimi, reversed a decision on Tuesday
(April 26) to appoint the Governor of Nineveh, Najim al-Jabouri, as the acting
mayor of Sinjar hours after the position was announced.
Kadhimi appointed
Jabouri as the acting mayor during a meeting of the Council of Ministers on
Tuesday, according to Iraqi News Agency.
The decision
drew criticism from the Ezidi community, where many felt they had been ignored
politically and preferred a member of their community for the position,
according to Ezidi Press.
Tension between
the Iraqi army and local forces in Sinjar increased over the past week and the
Iraqi army deployed additional forces to the district on Monday.
