SULAIMANI — At least thirteen people were killed and 30 others were wounded in an attack by Islamic State (ISIS) militants in Diyala governorate’s al-Miqdadiya district on Tuesday night (October 26), Deputy Governor Karim Ali told NRT.
A security source told NRT that most of the victims of the attack in al-Rashad village are civilians, including women and children.
An NRT reporter said that the militants planted mines on the roads around the village and shot people and security forces.
ISIS later claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement.
Late on Tuesday, Spokesperson for Diyala Police Directorate Nihad Muhammed told NRT the militants hid themselves in the area and the fighting ended.
Muhammed said that the incident began when two villagers from the Tamimi tribe, who had been abducted by the militants, were not released as expected.
Large numbers of Iraqi security forces were deployed in the area following the clash.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa
al-Kadhimi said in a tweet early on Wednesday that Iraq "will continue to chase
terrorists inside and outside Iraq.”
"The Miqdadiya crime will not go
unpunished. Their heinous crimes strengthen our determination to uproot them
from Mesopotamia,” he added.
Also on Twitter, Kurdistan
Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani condemned the attackand extended his condolences to the families of the victims.
"ISIS remains a threat to regional
peace and coexistence and requires a collective, regional response,” he said.
