The first session of the new Iraqi parliament began on Monday, December 29, 2025, with the swearing-in of members of the sixth legislative term.

According to the agenda released by the parliament’s media department, the session is chaired by Amer Faiz, the oldest member of parliament, and includes the oath-taking of all newly elected lawmakers. Following the swearing-in, parliament is scheduled to proceed with steps to elect its presidency.

Meanwhile, political differences remain over the post of speaker of parliament. Four parties within the Sunni National Political Council announced late Sunday that they have nominated Haibat Halbusi for the position. However, the Azm coalition, the fifth party within the council, rejected the nomination and instead put forward Musana Samarai as its candidate.

The disagreements come as parliament prepares for key decisions that will shape the formation of the next Iraqi government.
