The Sunni National Political Council met again last night to decide on a candidate for the speaker of the Iraqi parliament but failed to reach an agreement, according to a statement issued by the council.
The statement said the council has decided to continue its meetings tomorrow in an effort to determine the candidate for the next speaker of parliament, while emphasizing the importance of complying with constitutional deadlines for holding the first session of parliament.
Thabit Abbas and Musana Samarai were named as the most prominent candidates for the post of speaker.
The first session of the sixth term of the Iraqi parliament is scheduled to be held on November 29 and will be chaired by Amer Faiz, the oldest member of parliament.
