Mizhda Mahmoud, the successful candidate of the new generation movement in the Iraqi parliament, said on Sunday that the Iraqi government has a responsibility to compensate the victims of the floods in Chamchamal, stressing that this duty is long overdue.
She said that while the outgoing Kurdistan Regional Government is responsible for compensating the flood victims in Chamchamal, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) are currently assisting affected families through charitable efforts, treating the aid as almsgiving rather than an official responsibility
Mahmoud also stated that Chamchamal should receive 24-hour electricity, noting that the city supplies gas for electricity production. She added that revenues generated from Chamchamal’s gas resources should be used to improve services and infrastructure in the city itself.
