The UN Secretary-General has arrived in Baghdad to conclude the United Nations mission in Iraq, according to UN Envoy to Iraq Mohammed Hassan.
In a statement, Hassan said UNAMI was established at the request of the Iraqi people and its conclusion also came at their request, stressing that the United Nations respects the wishes of countries hosting its missions.
"Iraqis hosted the mission for more than two decades under difficult circumstances, but they have concluded that UNAMI has achieved its objectives. Now it is time for Iraqis to take matters into their own hands,” he said.
Hassan added that the mission’s work has been successfully completed, with only three remaining files. These include cases related to missing persons and third-country nationals following the war and invasion of Kuwait, the issue of Kuwaiti property, and the handover of the National Archives, including more than 400 boxes containing Kuwaiti artifacts.
