Rebaz Hamlan, the assistant to the Prime Minister in the outgoing Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), said in an interview with KDP-affiliated media on Sunday that the Ministry of Interior will not be handed over to the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), stressing that the ministry is part of the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) share in the next cabinet.
Hamlan stated that the KDP and PUK held several rounds of talks prior to the elections in an effort to reach an agreement on forming a new government, but the PUK declined the proposals presented during those meetings.
According to Hamlan, the two parties have already reached an understanding on most government posts. The only unresolved issue between them remains the Interior Ministry, which continues to be the main point of contention in ongoing negotiations.
