The Sulaimani court on Tuesday sentenced Shaswar Abdulwahid Qadir, leader of the New Generation Movement, to five months in prison following the third hearing of his trial.
Members of the New Generation Movement factions in both the Kurdistan and Iraqi parliaments told NRT that they "are proud to support the leader of our movement, whether he is in prison or abroad,” describing the ruling as politically motivated and illegal.
On August 12, 2025, security forces raided Abdulwahid’s house late at night and arrested him without prior notice, based on several complaints that have not been substantiated in court. Local and international media reported that his arrest came just a week after he had warned that if the Kurdistan Region did not resolve the salary crisis and implement its agreements with Baghdad, the movement would take a firm stance.
Following his detention, New Generation MPs said the safety of their leader rests with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).
