Electricity was cut off for hours in several neighborhoods of Sulaimani and Duhok on Saturday night (August 16, 2025), despite government claims of a "24-hour electricity” project.

NRT reporters said that in many areas of Sulaimani, government power went out while private generators were already removed, leaving residents completely without electricity. In Duhok, seven neighborhoods have been without power since 2 p.m. yesterday.

The outgoing Kurdistan Regional Government had previously increased electricity prices 13 times under the "lighting project,” promising round-the-clock power and the elimination of private generators. However, with frequent outages during the peak of summer heat, citizens have been left frustrated and without alternatives.
