In a significant move to address Iraq’s escalating water crisis, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has agreed to release 420 cubic meters of water per second into the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

The agreement was reached during a meeting between Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmoud Mashhadani and President Erdogan in Ankara, according to a statement from the speaker's office on Thursday.

The decision comes amid growing concerns over declining water levels in Iraqi rivers, which have threatened agriculture, drinking water supplies, and overall environmental stability. The release of water from Turkey is expected to provide crucial relief to communities and farmlands across Iraq.

Iraq and Turkey maintain strong geographical and political ties, and this agreement reflects ongoing cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

Meanwhile, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani announced the construction of four strategic offshore water stations to help alleviate water shortages in Basra province, a region particularly affected by drought and salinity.

This step marks one of the most critical bilateral measures in recent years to mitigate the effects of climate change and upstream damming on Iraq’s water resources.
