The Ministry of Electricity announced on Tuesday that it will return 1.4 billion Iraqi dinars to citizens enrolled in the government’s 24-hour lighting project. The reimbursement will come in the form of credits applied to May’s electricity bills.
According to ministry officials, more than 60,000 families are set to benefit from this initiative. Each household will receive up to 20,000 dinars in bill credits, while some neighborhoods—likely those most affected by the price hikes—will receive around 80,000 dinars on average.
The refund aims to compensate citizens who had paid more than the revised electricity rates introduced by the outgoing government. It also targets households that did not receive the government’s promised subsidies, which were supposed to increase by 50% in January and 25% in February.
This move is seen as an effort to correct billing imbalances and provide relief amid public dissatisfaction with inconsistent subsidy implementation and electricity pricing.
