A wave of dust is expected to cover Iraq and parts of the Kurdistan Region starting tomorrow, with temperatures rising by two to three degrees Celsius, according to the Kurdistan Regional Meteorological Agency.
The upcoming dust wave is expected to be lighter than previous ones, but weather authorities warned that dusty conditions will continue through the middle of the week, affecting visibility and air quality across multiple provinces.
This event follows a severe sandstorm earlier this week that turned skies orange and reduced visibility to less than one kilometer in some areas. Over 2,700 people were hospitalized due to respiratory issues, prompting increased concerns about public health.
Experts say Iraq and the Kurdistan Region have seen a rise in the frequency and intensity of dust storms in recent years. According to environmental studies, approximately 40% of Iraq’s land is affected by desertification, one of the primary drivers behind the growing dust phenomena. Factors such as climate change, declining rainfall, deforestation, and poor water management have further intensified the situation.
The Kurdistan Region has also experienced a surge in dust storms, raising health concerns, especially among vulnerable populations. Repeated exposure to fine dust particles is linked to chronic respiratory diseases and other long-term health risks.
Authorities have advised residents to avoid outdoor activities during dust waves, keep windows closed, and wear masks if necessary.
