SULAIMANI — The Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility
on Sunday (March 12) for the kidnapping and murder of a shepherd in Kifri
district, south of Sulaimani.
The shepherd was from Khasadarl village and his abduction by
unknown gunmen was reported 15 days ago.
ISIS said in a statement they killed the shepherd, a 54
year-old Turkoman.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al Abadi declared victory over
ISIS in Iraq in December, 2017, but remnants of the group have survived, in
particular in mountainous areas of Diyala and in areas disputed between the
control of the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government.
The director of Nawjol subdistrict said on Thursday two
shepherds were released in Madhat village in Kifri after a ransom of $50,000
was paid.
