SULAIMANI — NRT reporter Ehsan Sabir said security forces used tear gas and sound bombs in order to suppress student protests in Sulaimani on Sunday (November 13).

Students at the University of Sulaimani continued their demand for the issuance of monthly stipends and a reduction of tuition for parallel education during the fifth day of protests.

Protests were also held in nearby cities including Chamchamal, Koya and Halabja and in Garmian and Raparin administrations.

Students say they received monthly stipends for only six months in 2021 and stated they will continue protests until their demands are met. Some students are also demanding to receive dorm accommodation.

Stipends help cover the cost of transportation and living expenses of students in the Kurdistan Region.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) suspended payment of students’ stipends in response to the financial crisis in 2014.

The KRG promised to issue stipends monthly in response to student protests last year but since then, students have faced months-long delays in receiving the funds.
