SULAIMANI — Shaswar
Abdulwahid, the leader of the New Generation Movement (NGM), has filed a
lawsuit at Iraq’s Federal Supreme Court against the president of the Kurdistan
Region and the speaker of parliament for extending the Kurdistan parliament’s
term.
Abdulwahid filed the
lawsuit against President Nechirvan Barzani and Parliament Speaker Rewaz Faiaq
on Sunday (October 23).
Abdulwahid's complaint
concerns extending parliament's term "outside the law and the will of the
people”.
The complaint states
the parliament was elected for only a specified time and no one has the right
to extend it, except the people.
Kurdistan parliament
voted on October 9 to extend parliament’s current term for another year.
NGM MPs objected to
the extension, describing it as "unlawful and unconstitutional", and
have said they would resign. The NGM group in parliament filed a lawsuit
against extending the term on October 12.
The current term of
the Kurdistan parliament, which ends on November 6, has now been extended until
November 2023.
The Kurdistan Region’s
parliamentary elections were scheduled to be held in October but the polls have
been postponed after the electoral commission was not reactivated due to
disputes between Kurdish parties.
