SULAIMANI — A suspected Islamic State (ISIS) attack on an
electricity transmission tower in Erbil governorate’s Makhmour district early
on Thursday morning (August 5) left local residents without power.
The attack took place in Kandar village.
Northern Electricity Transmission General Company said in a
statement that thirteen towers have been destroyed in Saladin, Kirkuk, and
Nineveh governorates over the past 48 hours and caused national electricity
service outages.
On Wednesday night, five towers were destroyed across the
three governorates.
In December, 2017, federal security forces, in cooperation
with the Peshmerga and the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) and aided by
Coalition airstrikes, declared victory over ISIS. Since then, the militant
group has resorted to guerrilla hit-and-run tactics, but remains a potent
threat in some parts of the country.
