SULAIMANI — The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said
on Monday (August 1) NRT journalists Karzan Tariq and Chenar Ahmed should be
"immediately and unconditionally released.”
The CPJ said the Kurdish authorities should stop "harassing”
members of the press and CPJ senior researcher Yeganeh Rezaian said journalists
must be "allowed to interview members of the public without fear that they will
be detained and harassed.”
On Monday morning, members of Asayish (security forces)
detained NRT reporter Tariq and his cameraman, Ahmed, while they were
interviewing people in Sulaimani’s bazaar about the Kurdistan Region’s economic
situation.
NRT sees the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) forces as
responsible for the team’s detention and safety.
Sulaimani Asayish forces are mainly managed by the PUK and
they take orders from PUK leaders and officials.
The history of Nalia Radio and Television (NRT) goes back to
the days when there were no independent media networks in the Kurdistan Region.
