SULAIMANI —
Residents of Sinjar district protested on Wednesday (June 15), against Turkey’s
airstrikes in the area that killed four people today.
Residents
demanded political forces leave the district and for an end to the airstrikes.
A protester
spoke to NRT and stated, "We have been living in danger for eight years now, we
want the forces to leave Sinjar.”
He said the
government has not responded to them and that they will not stop protesting
until their demands are met.
Turkey has
carried out periodic airstrikes in Sinjar, the most recent on Wednesday when four people, including one child, were
killed and four others injured.
In May, a
clash between the Iraqi forces and the Sinjar Resistance Units (YBS) broke out,
which lasted for three days.
The YBS
considers itself an official force in Iraq, while the Iraqi security forces
have asked all armed groups to leave Sinjar, including YBS.
Baghdad and
Erbil signed a security and stability agreement, the Sinjar Agreement, in
October 2020, focusing on reconciliation through security and administrative
changes.
