SULAIMANI — The Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, Shakhawan Abdullah, said on Monday (June 13) that without the Sadrist Movement in parliament, the second-largest Shia coalition, the Coordination Framework, can form the government.

Abdullah, a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), said during an appearance on NRT’s Tawtwe program that the Sadrist Movement did not want to form a government with the Coordination Framework.

He also stated the Sadrist bloc is no longer part of parliament but instead has decided to take the opposition party to the streets with the public, not with parliament. "Only the Sadrist Movement can move the streets in Iraq,” he stated, referring to protests.

MPs from the Sadrist Movement resigned from parliament on Sunday after the movement’s leader, Muqtada al-Sadr, asked them to prepare their letters of resignation.

Abdullah said legally unelected candidates to Iraq’s parliament will replace the MPs who resigned. Abdullah stated the KDP has not reached a decision on whether they would resign from parliament as well. The KDP joined the Saving the Homeland Alliance, a bloc that was formed with the Sadrist Movement and the Sunni Muslim al-Siyada Coalition.

He also stated Shia parties believe the government will only last for a couple of months without the Sadrist Movement and the Coalition Framework will face trouble.

The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, stated on Monday he was concerned over political changes in Baghdad and hoped there would no further disputes.
