SULAIMANI —
The Iraqi parliament passed the food security bill on Wednesday (June 8),
allocating 25 trillion dinars ($17 million) to the project bill.
The bill is
an emergency draft law for food security and development, which aims to keep a
food rationing program amid the increasing price of food worldwide.
Rebwar
Awrahman, an MP from the New Generation Movement (NGM) and a member of the
finance committee in the Iraqi parliament, told NRT the law is important for
Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
He also
stated the issues of food and medication supplies was important to the NGM and
if the project is implemented, the food-rationing program and medicine will
also be provided for the Kurdistan Region.
Sattar
Irabi, a member of the parliamentary finance committee, said on May 31 the
committee held meetings with the relevant parties and its members discussed the
bill’s articles.
The food
security bill was legalized under the government of Iraqi Prime Minister
Mustafa al-Kadhimi, despite an earlier ruling from the Federal Supreme Court on
May 15 that the caretaker government did not have the authority to create
legislation.
The court
said the new Iraqi government, which is yet to be formed, has the authority to
legislate new laws.
