SULAIMANI — The case against Onur
Gencer for the murder of Deniz Poyraz held its first hearing in Izmir on Wednesday
(December 29).
The prosecution is requesting an aggravated
life sentence for Gencer over the shooting death in June of Poyraz, an employee
at the office of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Izmir.
Several members of the HDP are attended
the hearing, in addition to some members of the Republican People’s Party (CHP),
Turkey’s main opposition party, and the Workers’ Party of Turkey (TIP), Bianet
news agency said.
Attendees criticized both the defendant’s
conduct and law enforcement’s treatment of him during the trial.
Some observers allege Gencer was
intending to provoke Poyraz’s family by smirking at them and making gestures.
They also claim he has been given preferential treatment by police, according
to Turkish media.
A fight broke out in the courtroom
after Gencer insulted Poyraz’s sister and advanced toward her family, according
to Bianet.
HDP Co-Chair Pervin Buldan alleged
Gencer received training from the Islamic State in Syria’s city of Manbij,
after the judge asked the defendant about his education. Gencer had posted armed
photos of himself at multiple locations in Syria on social media.
Lawyers for the Poyraz family believe
Gencer was not acting alone, the Turkish Minute reported, and question why the
prosecution has not investigated the possibility of an organized plot behind
the attack. More than 500 attorneys represent the family, according to Bianet.
One of the lawyers stated she believed
the prosecutor’s office was not impartial considering the crime was committed
against the HDP.
The prosecutor’s indictment said Gencer
confessed to the murder and no link has been revealed between the defendant and
any terrorist organization, the Turkish Minute said.
