SULAIMANI — The bodies of 16 migrants who drowned in the English Channel last month will be returned to the Kurdistan Region this week.

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Spokesman Jutyar Adil said the bodies were delayed for a month for the identification process and will be brought back through Erbil International Airport on Friday.

Thirty one migrants, the majority Kurds, drowned on November 24 when a boat carrying 50 migrants capsized in the English Channel. The vessel had set out from the French port-city of Calais.

French authorities announced almost 15,400 people attempted to cross the channel and reach the UK over the past eight months.
