SULAIMANI — Supporters of Iran-backed groups clashed with
security forces outside of Baghdad’s Green Zone on Friday (November 5).
The crowd had gathered to dispute the outcome of last
month’s parliamentary election, which showed a steep drop in the number of
seats held by the Fatah Alliance.
Hospital sources told Reuters that twenty-one protesters were hurt, as were nine police.
In a statement, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi said that protesters should exercise their rights peacefully and avoid violence.
He also called on the security forces to respect the rights of protesters and for political parties to lower the temperature and engage in dialogue.
