SULAIMANI — In an attempt to justify the slow process of
public sector salary disbursement, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)
Spokesperson Jotiar Adil said on Tuesday (November 2) that the KRG has problems
collecting internal sources of income like taxes, but did not go into detail
about how Erbil would address the issue.
Adil claimed during a press conference that the government
is making every effort to pay all public servants and pensioners as soon as
possible, with employees of a number of ministries still not paid although this
month’s disbursement process started on October 25.
A source from the KRG Ministry of Finance told NRT that
workers at the Ministry of Education will be paid on Wednesday.
Regarding the pre-election deal that authorized Baghdad to
send Erbil monthly transfers of 200 billion Iraqi dinars ($137 million), Adil
said that this month’s funds have not been transferred yet.
Last year, KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said that the
KRG had $33 billion in debts and obligations and no savings.
Amid a budget dispute with Baghdad, the KRG has refused to
send any of the 250,000 barrels of oil per day or its monetary equivalent
required by the 2021 Federal Budget Law, which would theoretically enable the
Kurdistan Region to gets its share of the budget.
