SULAIMANI — German police said on Friday (October 29) that
they found an Iraqi national dead inside a vehicle in a town near the Polish-German
border.
According to AFP, the 32-year-old man had been dead for "several
hours.” An estimated 30 people had been smuggled over the border in the vehicle
and had most likely entered the European Union from Belarus.
It was not immediately clear where the man was from in Iraq.
Thousands of migrants from Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and elsewhere
have used this route since President Alexander Lukashenko made it easier for
migrants to arrive in the country in retaliation for European criticism of Minsk’s
crackdown on opposition leaders.
At least six Iraqi citizens have died while trying to
migrate to Europe via Belarus so far this year, with worries that that number
will increase as winter takes hold.
