Today, August 25, 2025, marks more than 12 days since the arrest of Shaswar Abdulwahid, leader of the New Generation Movement. His detention period, which had expired, was extended until Wednesday, with a second court appearance scheduled for Thursday, August 28.

Abdulwahid was first tried earlier this month, after security forces raided his home in Sulaimanyah on August 12 and arrested him without prior notice. The arrest was reportedly based on several complaints not yet proven in court.

Local and foreign media reported that his detention came days after he warned that, if the Kurdistan Region failed to resolve the salary crisis and implement its agreements with Baghdad, his movement would take a strong stance. Following his arrest, NGM MPs declared that the safety of their leader remains the responsibility of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).
