SULAIMANI — A security forces unit affiliated with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) raided the Gasin Cement Company in Sulaimani’s Bazian district on Thursday (September 9).

A source from the company who spoke on condition of anonymity told NRT that the unit remained at the facility for one hour and broke some windows and doors.

It said that members of the unit gathered all of the employees who were on the premises in one place and seized their mobile phones. No company property was taken off site.

The security force did not provide any judicial order to justify the raid, the source said.

Head of the company’s Uploading Department Salar Abas told NRT that their employees were insulted by those conducting the raid.

He said that police arrived two hours after the raid and that the company will file a complaint.

Abas said that they do not know what force it was because the members were masked and did not identify themselves.

According to information obtained by NRT, the same force later surrounded Faruq Group.

The raids come in the context of an ongoing power struggle between the two co-presidents of the PUK, Lahur Sheikh Jangi and Bafel Talabani, and their respective camps.

It is common in the Kurdistan Region for influential members of the ruling parties to have significant financial interests in major private companies, with those investments and resources becoming important levers of power.
