SULAIMANI — Iraq’s federal court issued a ruling on Wednesday (January 25) that sending funds to the Kurdistan Region was illegal.

The leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Masoud Barzani, has described the decision as a hostile stance toward the Kurdistan Region.

Barzani said in a statement on Wednesday that it was unfortunate the federal court has made another decision against the Kurdistan Region, preventing the Region from receiving an amount of money from the federal government.

The statement said the problem was not about money but about the violation of rights and principles.

Barzani added, the KDP participation in the new government was based on a clear and detailed plan that all parties would agree on.

"Today's decision by the federal court, is against the political process and against the Iraqi government and against the state administration's own coalition program," Barzani said.

The Federal Supreme Court ruled it was illegal to send money to the Region in response to a complaint filed by several Iraqi MPs over an amount of funds the Iraqi Council of Ministers had sent to the Region.
