SULAIMANI — The newly designated Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, announced on Sunday an investigation has begun over 2.5 billion euros missing from Rafidain bank.

Iraq’s Oil Minister, Ihsan Abdul Jabbar, revealed on Saturday a group had taken 3.7 trillion Iraqi dinars from the national tax authority fund in Rafidain bank, the largest bank in the country.

Sudani said the issue of the missing funds from Rafidain was a top priority and vowed, "We will not allow the money of the Iraqis to be stolen, as happened with the funds of the General Authority for Taxes in the Rafidain Bank.”

Jabbar was removed from the role of acting finance minister on October 11 after a vote from parliament, following criticism over mismanagement and his alleged neglect in sending financial briefs to parliament.

Former Finance Minister Ali Allawi resigned in August in an act of protest over what he described as widespread corruption.

The designated prime minister said on Sunday legal measures will be taken to end corruption in all government institutions
