SULAIMANI — Salih Mohammed, a prominent figure
in the Sadrist Movement, said on Thursday (September 8) the movement's former MPs will not return to office and that parliament can hold a vote on
dissolving the legislature without them.
Mohammed said in a statement some of the
Sadrist Movement's supporters are
attempting to find a legal way for the MPs, who resigned over the summer, to
return, a move Mohammed has insisted will never happen. He stated the MPs who
resigned have set barrier to making any deals with the Coordination Framework,
the Sadrist Movement's main rival in
parliament.
"If we return, the dissolution of parliament
should be acceptable to our allies, including the Kurds and the Sunnis, but we
don’t think they will agree," Mohammed said. He stated parliament could also be dissolved if the majority of
MPs resign.
MPs from the Sadrist Movement resigned from the
Iraqi parliament in June at the direction of the movement's leader, Muqtada al-Sadr, who has also demanded parliament be dissolved. His
supporters broke into the parliament building and held sit-in protests for weeks in
August.
The Iraqi Federal Supreme Court ruled against
the dissolution of parliament on Wednesday, based on Article 93 of the Iraqi
constitution and Article 5 of the federal court's law on the abolition of parliament.
