SULAIMANI — Iraq’s Minister of Electricity, Adil Karim, said on Wednesday (June 29) the country’s gas resources are not enough to be used for electricity production.

"All the natural gas in the country can only produce 13 to 14 thousand megawatts of electricity,” Karim stated.

During his appearance on NRT’s Tawtwe program, Karim said Iraq has worked a lot to provide more electricity and the country made a lot of progress until 2014, but afterwards, progress slowed down.

Iraq needs 35,000 megawatts of electricity, Karim said, adding that in four years, the country will be in need of 50,000 to 55,000 megawatts.

He predicted Iraq will still need to buy natural gas from Iran more than 10 years from now.

On the question of whether the Kurdistan Region’s natural gas can be used to produce enough electricity, Karim said if the Region can build enough gas fields, it might be able to provide 20 to 22 hours of electricity using natural gas.

He said Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity and the Region’s counterpart are in connection to work together because both ministries can help one another.

Karim talked about Iraq buying electricity from other countries to provide adequate power and said Iraq tried to buy 1,000 megawatts of electricity from Tehran, but Iran is facing its own difficulties with electricity.
