SULAIMANI — The leader of
the Islamic State (ISIS), Abu Ibrahim al-Hashemi al-Quraishi, was killed during
a raid by US special forces in northern Syria on Thursday (February 3),
President Joe Biden’s administration said.
Quraishi, who led ISIS
following the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in 2019, killed himself and his
family with explosives during the raid, according to Reuters.
All American forces
involved in the operation returned from the scene safely, Biden announced in a
statement.
"At the beginning of the
operation the terrorist target exploded a bomb that killed him and members of
his own family, including women and children,” a senior US official told
Reuters.
The raid targeted
Quraishi in a house in the Atmeh area near the border with Turkey. Rescue
workers said at least 13 people, including six children and four women, were
killed in clashes and in the bomb eruption.
Area residents reported
helicopters, heavy gunfire and explosions beginning around midnight.
