SULAIMANI — Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Sunday (September 19) that an Iraqi migrant woman died while trying to cross from Belarus into Poland.

The ministry said that it was working in coordination with the Polish and Belarussian governments to identify what caused her death.

Angry at criticism by the European Union of its authoritarian crackdown on protesters, Belarus has quietly offered itself up as a conduit for migrants seeking a route into Europe, opening flight routes to Iraq and other places.

In August, 690 Iraqi refugees were stranded between Belarus and Lithuania, but were eventually sent back to Iraq.
