SULAIMANI — Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) reiterated on Saturday (September 18) that voters living abroad will not be allowed to vote in the upcoming parliamentary election unless they return to Iraq to cast ballots.

IHEC previously announced the change on March 23, but is highlighting that decision due to misinformation.

IHEC media office member Mohannad Mustafa told state-owned Iraqi News Agency that "rumors about the use of voting cards of people abroad by their relatives are far from true.”

Previously, voters abroad could cast ballots at Iraqi embassies and consulates around the world, but officials decided not to do so this cycle because of the expense and administrative hurdles imposed by the shortened window for preparation.
