SULAIMANI — A 13-year-old shepherd was killed after an old mortar shell exploded in Qairawan village in Kirkuk’s Lailan sub-district early on Wednesday (September 15), according to a security source.

A source from Lailan Police Station told NRT that the mortar dated back to the Baathist era and had remained in the area.

It said that the victim was from the village.

Unexploded ordnance and landmines left over from numerous past conflicts like the Iran-Iraq War litter Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, particularly in areas along the borders.
