SULAIMANI — Media outlets affiliated with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) announced on Thursday (July 29) that Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani will serve as the new chair of the Kurdistan Coalition list for Iraq’s early parliamentary elections in October.

The original leader of the electoral pact between the PUK and the Change Movement (Gorran) was to be Lahur Sheikh Jangi, but he stepped aside earlier this month after being ousted as PUK co-president in a intra-party factional dispute.

The change of leadership for the joint list was announced following a meeting between PUK Co-President Bafel Talabani and Gorran General Coordinator Omer Said Ali in Sulaimani.

Sheikh Jangi was a driving force behind the formation of the electoral pact, which was designed to solidify the parties’ control over Sulaimani and expand into areas in Erbil and Duhok dominated by the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

Starting on July 8, Bafel and Qubad Talabani launched a series of moves to oust Sheikh Jangi and his associates from his positions of power within the party and its associated security and media apparatus.

In a statement on July 19, Sheikh Jangi said that he would step aside as co-president and relinquish his leadership of the Kurdistan Coalition as well.

The election is currently scheduled for October 10.
