SULAIMANI — Poland’s parliament passed legislation on Thursday (October 14) that would enable the authorities to pushback migrants, many of them Iraqi nationals, trying to cross the border from Belarus.

Under international law, migrants have the right to claim asylum and it is illegal to send them back to places where they may be in danger.

The new law follows up on regulations developed this summer that say that migrants caught illegally crossing the border can be sent back to where they came from based on a decision by the local Boarder Guard chief, according to Reuters.

Human rights groups have argued that this does not give migrants effective recourse to contest the decision by law and violates international law.

At least six people have died trying to cross the border from Belarus into Poland or Lithuania. Five of them were Iraqis.
