SULAIMANI — With the leaves changing and the rains starting to arrive in the Kurdistan Region, the seventh annual Halabja Autumn Pomegranate Festival opened on Thursday (October 14) with hundreds of farmers and crafters from the governorate and surrounding areas showing off their produce and goods.

Halabja Governor Azad Tofiq and Halabja Agriculture Director Sattar Mahmud were present as the three-day festival kicked off under the sponsorship of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Agriculture.

Mahmud said that this year's local pomegranate production is lower than usual because of the lack of rainfall last winter, but that quality remains high.

Beyond the classic autumn fruit, local walnuts and honey were featured heavily at booths.

The festival lasts until Saturday.
